CHRISTMAS TREE, TABLE TOP CONTEST

Rules:

1. Size – not more than 3-foot tall from base to the top of the tree. Can be fresh Christmas tree or made out of any material.

2. Ornaments –ornaments can be hand- made, purchased or of recycled materials.

3. Decorations – to follow theme of “Pasko sa Pilipinas” (Christmas in the Philippines)

4. Application fee – A $5.00 non-refundable fee is required per Christmas tree entry. Write Checks to Fil-Com Center.

5. Entries must be in for judging by 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2008 at the Filipino Community Center . All entries may be picked up at the end of the mass (7:00 pm) that evening. Winning Christmas Trees (Table Top) will remain property of Fil-Com Center.

“PAROL” CONTEST GUIDELINES

The primary purpose of the Parol contest is to encourage organizations and individuals to perpetuate the creation of the Christmas symbol in the Philippines which graces the windows, doorways and streets during this season. This also provides a venue for artistic expression.

The contest is open to all. Entries for the contest shall be for one of two categories:
TRADITIONAL PAROL
· Five-point star design
· Frame can be bamboo or any bamboo substitute
· Cover can be paper or any material
MODERN PAROL
· Innovative or stylized design
· Any material can be used, including recycled material


Rules:
1. The parol must be hand-made and made in Hawaii . No commercially produced one may be entered in the contest (e.g. made of capiz or other material manufactured in the Philippines ). Entrants must attest to its being created here in Hawaii .

2. The size is no less than a foot in diameter and no greater than three feet across excluding the tassels. It must be capable of being hung or may be propped up on a pole that can be carried. Optional: battery operated lighting (no candles), movable decorations.

3. Entries must be in for judging by 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2008 at the Filipino Community Center . All entries may be picked up at the end of the mass (7:00 pm) that evening. Winning Parols will remain property of Fil-Com Center.

4. Only 1 (one) entry will be allowed per category.

5. A non-refundable entry fee of $5 will be charged for each parol entry.

Schedule of Activities

PASKO SA FILCOM ‘08
Sunday, December 14, 2008
3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Filipino Community Center, in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate General, the Philippine Celebrations Coordinating Committee of Hawaii (PCCCH), the Filipino Association of University Women (FAUW), the University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA), the Filipino American Historical Society of Hawaii (FAHSOH), the Congress of Visayan Organization (COVO), the Oahu Filipino Community Council (OFCC) and the United Filipino Council of Hawaii (UFCH), will be holding "Pasko sa FilCom" (Christmas at FilCom) on Sunday, December 14, 2008 at the FilCom Center from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The event showcases Christmas as it is traditionally celebrated in the Philippines. There will be food booths and cooking demonstrations of such Filipino delicacies like "linubian," "puto bumbong," "bibingka," and others. There will be "parol" (Chistmas lantern) making demostration, children's games such as "pabitin" and "palayok"(breaking the pot). There will be Christmas displays and videos and also "parol"(lantern) and Christmas tree making contests.
An entertainment program featuring the Royal Hawaiian Band, Filipino folk dances, the Silangan Singers, and the FilCom Himig at Indak. A "Panunuluyan" (Search for an Inn) will be performed, followed by a mass and musical entertainment featuring a "kulintang" group and a live band.
